GitHub Copilot X: The Future of Programming Has Arrived

GitHub recently announced the release of Copilot X, their next-gen coding assistant that is powered by GPT-4. Copilot X offers new features that make its predecessor look like a child's toy. With these AI tools, developers get a huge advantage, and within the next two years, no one coding professionally will be left behind. While this news may be pessimistic for some, programming is not dead. In fact, it is a great time to be alive if you love building things.

Copilot X has at least five game-changing features. The big one is its built-in chat window, which allows you to highlight a block of code and ask for an explanation, ask it to refactor it or generate some unit tests. Copilot X for documentation allows you to generate answers based on a specific library's documentation, such as React, Azure, and MDN, enabling you to generate answers and tutorials on the fly. The third feature is voice-activated Copilot, which allows you to control VS Code and write code entirely from voice commands.

Feature number four is Copilot for pull requests, which generates a description for you based on the changes you made to the code. Finally, feature number five is the Copilot CLI, which offers AI autocompletion not just in the text editor but also in the terminal. You only need to tell it what you want to do with a certain library, such as FFmpeg, and it will generate the command along with an explanation.

Copilot X is currently in technical preview, so it is not available for use yet. However, when it does become available, it will only make us more powerful. AI still cannot deliver a great product to the end user, and it will need programmers who understand how to build these systems. These tools will make it possible to build them ten times faster, thanks to AI tooling. While Microsoft is dominating the space, acquiring GitHub, and taking a major stake in OpenAI, it is a great time to be alive.
